Landmark Group, the region's leading retail and hospitality conglomerate, announced it will open registrations for the third edition of its annual 'Beat Diabetes' walkathon in UAE from Friday, November 10, 2011.
The walkathon in the UAE is scheduled on Friday, November 18, 2011 and will flag off from the Oasis Centre, Dubai. Registration for the walkathon can be done across the following Landmark Group brands in the UAE; Centrepoint, Home Centre, Fitness First, Max and Oasis Centre.
The Group will also conduct walkathons across Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and India, Bangalore during November which is the International Diabetes Awareness Month.
Legendary cricketer, Wasim Akram, flagged off the 3.1 km walk last year and has once again extended his solidarity and will participate in the 2011 edition of the event and lead the walk.
This year the Group inked a partnership with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), an umbrella organisation of over 200 national diabetes associations in over 160 countries. Landmark Group becomes the organisation's retail corporate supporter partner. Mario Fetz, IDF Director of External Relations will join the walk in UAE to support the Beat Diabetes initiative.
Open to all age groups, participation in the walkathon is free of charge and all walkers are given complimentary t-shirts and caps. Blood Glucose test are administered free of cost on the day of the walk and the Group also distributes awareness pamphlets to educate the public about the condition.
Across the year the Group conducts various activities, in its ongoing endeavor to educate people about the growing propensity of diabetes. The Walkathon is their champion event, which culminates all their efforts towards the cause.
In 2010, the Landmark Group's 'Beat Diabetes' walkathon attracted over 25,000 people and over 30,000 people were administered free blood glucose test across six countries. In UAE alone over 8,000 people across the different Emirates participated in the walk and the number is expected to grow to over 10,000 this year.
Diabetes is a silent killer that has no cure, but it can be managed by making lifestyle changes. Landmark Group's mission is to create awareness through the walkathon and encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle to "Beat Diabetes".
