Landmark Group, Dubai Sports Council unveil detailed plans for 'Beat Diabetes' Walk

Landmark Group, one of Middle East's largest retail conglomerates, in close coordination with Dubai Sports Council - the premier sports governing body in Dubai, today revealed more details of the 3.1km 'Beat Diabetes' walkathon on Friday, 13 November 2009.

Registration for the walk is free of charge and can be done in Oasis Centre as well as Home Centre and Centrepoint stores across UAE. Upon registration, a prospective participant is given a sticker with a unique number. The sticker needs to be presented on the morning of the walk at the registration desk of Oasis Centre & every participant will receive a t-shirt and cap. Participants can also register at Oasis Centre on 13 November from 7:00am while the walk starts at 8:00am. The initiative is part of Landmark Group's campaign to drive awareness and education on diabetes prevention and management.

about the 'Beat Diabetes' Walkathon, Dr. Ahmed Al Sharif, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, said: "Diabetes is fast spreading across the UAE - almost one in four people in the country are suffering from the condition. That's over a million men, women and children. Dubai Sports Council is happy to be supporting this initiative by Landmark Group, which will go a long way and is also in tune with our long term vision in creating a fit and healthier society. "

The walk is open for anyone medically fit, while children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Residents are encouraged to bring their spouses and kids for the walkathon as strollers will be permitted during the walk. However, bicycles, roller-skates, rollerblades, shoes with wheels or scooters will not be allowed at the walkathon. Marshals & volunteers will be deployed to manage the crowd during the 3.1km walk.

Diabetes tests will be offered free of charge to participants and the general public at Oasis Centre on the 13 and 14 of November. The tests will be conducted by medical experts from Rashid Hospital along with volunteers and results will be instantaneous. People with signs of susceptibility to diabetes will be advised on how to seek further medical attention.
